Millennium(千年紀)과 2000년(Y2K)



서기2000년은 두번 째 밀레니엄(Millennium=千年紀라고도 한다: 예수가 재림하며 시작되는 신성한 1천년)이 완성(종료)되는 해이며,세번 째 Millennium(千年)은 21세기와 마찬가지로 2001년 1월 1일에 시작된다.

수리적으로 머리가 돌아가는 사람은 "거 뭣인가 잘못 된 것 아녀?" 하고 의심을 품는 것이 오히려 당연하다.

왜 제3千年紀(3rd Millennium=새천년)와 21세기가 2000년이 아니고 2001년에 시작해 갖고 수많은 보통사람들과 머리좋은 수학자들까지 헷갈리게 만들었는가 하면, 그것이 깊은 사연이 있었지 않았겠어요?

그러면 이야기는 다시 삼천포로 빠진다.

언제부터 서력기원(서기)을 썼느냐 한번 살펴보자면, 6세기(AD523 년 경)에 어떤 기독교수도승(Dionysius Exiguus)이 처음으로 예수 탄생을 기원으로 사용하기 시작했고, 그때까지 사용하고 있던 연대는 물론 로마 달력(Julian Calendar)이었으며 우스꽝스럽게도 로마 숫자에는 "0"(zero)이 없었기에 서기 "0"년부터가 아닌 서기 1년부터 계산하기 시작했다는 이야깁니다.

좀더 시간과 관심이 있는 사람은 아래 표를 참조하면 단번에 이해해버릴 것이라고요.

그러면 과연 Millennium이 어떤 의미가 있어 이렇게 지구촌 전체가 떠들썩 한가 한번 짚어 보기로 하자.

사이비종교 등에서는 서기 2000년에 세상의 종말이 온다고 가장 부정적인 의미로 보는가 하면 카톨릭에서는 2000년을 대희년(大禧年 = Jubilee Year : 종교에 편견을 갖고 있는 사람은 SKIP해도 좋음)으로 선포해 엄청나게 중요하게 생각하며 축하 준비에 여념이 없을 정도이다.

그러나 일반적으로 2000년을 축하하고 의미깊게 하는 것은, 항간에서 잘못 얘기하고 있는 새로운 천년의 첫해가 아니고(아직도 복습을 안한 사람이 있네), 뭐랄까 2000년에 제2의 천년기가 끝나고 2001년부터 새천년이 시작되는 것을 맞이하고 축하하는 1년간('크리스마스 이브'라고 하듯이 제3천년기의 '이브해'라고나 할까?)으로서 무엇보다 의의가 있다 하겠다. 그래서 1999년 1월1일부터 2001년 12월31일까지의 3년간을 "Millennial Moment"라고 부르는 사람들도 있다.

자 그러면 제1 Millennium(이 완성된 해)에는 어떤 어마어마한 일들이 벌어졌을까요?

(답 후보1) 유럽에서 대지진이 일어났다.

(답 후보2) 인도에서 대화재가 발생하여 석달간 끄지 못했다.

(답 후보3) 남아메리카에서 100M도 넘는 해일이 도시를 덮쳤다.

(답 후보4) 남극의 얼음이 절반 녹아 흘렀다.

기록에 의하면 실망스럽게도 서기1000년에는 이렇다할 만한 사건들이 아무것도 발생하지 않았다. 다시 말하면 대부분의 사람들이 서기1000년이 어떻게 지나갔는지도 잘 모르고 지냈다는 말이 더 옳을 것 같다.

아니 그게 아니고 중요한 일들(특히 종교적인)이 수없이 일어났지만 거의 기록이 정리되고 남아 있지 않은 것 같다. 이러한 톤으로 가장 강력한 주장을 펼치면서 Y1K(서기 1000년)의 사적 자료탐구에 여념이 없는 사람이 바로 Richard Landes 이다.
